A beloved Square Enix RPG from the 90s is getting revived for modern consoles, including PlayStation 5. The rerelease will also mark the classic game’s American debut after solely launching in Japan and PAL regions back in the day.
Originally developed by Quintet and published by Enix, Terranigma is set to re-released for latest gaming platforms. The enhanced version is being made by Clear River Games, in association with Square Enix, reports Gematsu.
“For over 30 years, Terranigma has cemented its status as a true undiscovered gem, inaccessible to many gamers in the West and long overdue for its time in the spotlight,” said Clear River Games general manager Ali Manzurin. He added, “we’re sure our audience will be as excited as we are to jump into this extraordinary world or Terranigma.”
What do we know about Terranigma?
Launched in 1995, Terranigma is an action RPG and the third installment in the developer’s unofficial Soul Blazer trilogy. Its first two games were 1992’s Soul Blazer and 1993’s Illusion of Gaia.
The official description for Terranigma’s rerelease reads, “Thematic boldness. Stunning character design. Excellent music. Smooth gameplay. Terranigma had it all… except a modern re-release. Now, the beloved action JRPG classic is back for the first time since 1995!”
The gameplay experience of the RPG includes unique world-building, snappy combat, an enchanting soundtrack, and stunning graphics. Its characters were designed by acclaimed manga artist Kamui Fujiwara. Sharing his excitement for the game’s revival, he said, “It may not be exactly the same as it was back then, but I’m sincerely delighted about it making its return to the current gaming environment.”
In the story, players take control of a young boy named Ark. He possesses a trustworthy spear that can help him perform thrusts, jump attacks, dashes, and much more. The main plot focuses on Ark’s longtime quest of resurrecting life on Earth after the planet’s destruction following the devastating war between divine forces.
Terranigma will rerelease for modern consoles, including PlayStation 5, in 2027.
