Resident Evil Veronica Zombies

Capcom’s PS5 Remake of PS2 Action Game Will Include Story Changes

Now that Capcom has finally confirmed that Resident Evil Veronica is in development, fans have been wondering exactly what changes the development team would make. After all, the original Code Veronica is over 25 years old at this point, and while it received critical acclaim when it first launched on the Dreamcast, it’s largely been forgotten by the fanbase because of how it slots into the series’ overarching narrative.

While Code Veronica is a mainline entry, its lack of having a numbered title makes it a bit of an outlier amongst its peers. Furthermore, its story focuses on Claire Redfield. Sure, she’s certainly a popular character, but aside from being central to Resident Evil 2 and Code Veronica, her presence is largely relegated to spin-off games (such as Resident Evil Revelations 2) and films.

It seems Capcom is well aware of how the original Code Veronica is a bit removed from the franchise’s ongoing story. Speaking to PlayStation LifeStyle during a Q&A session at last week’s Summer Game Fest, series producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi shed light on some of the changes the development team would be making.

“First, we remade Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4, now we’re making Veronica, and then the story goes onto [Resident Evil] 7, 8, and 9. We are making some changes [in Veronica] to have more continuity in the larger Resident Evil universe.”

Interestingly, Hirabayashi did not mention Resident Evil 5 or 6 during the aforementioned Q&A session, but that very well might stem from the fact that Resident Evil Requiem’s depiction of Oswell Spencer differs from his portrayal in Resident Evil 5’s DLC, and, well, Resident Evil 6’s plot is a bit of a mess.

It’s not entirely clear how much of the core plot will change with Resident Evil Veronica, but with it set to release next year, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
