PS4’s RAM Going From 4GB to 8GB “Was a bit of a Business Decision”

Way, way back at E3 2013 in June, we told you about how Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox, said quite bluntly to Adam Boyes, VP of Publisher Relations at SCEA, “If you go with 4GB of GDDR5 [on PS4], you are done.” This, along with feedback from many other developers, contributed to Sony ultimately upping the PS4’s RAM from 4GB to 8GB.

As part of a presentation at TGS this week (via GameSpot), Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, went into a little further detail about the RAM upgrade:

And because we chose expensive memory…we really liked the performance, but it’s pricy, right? So going to 8GB was a bit of a business decision. But we were able to make that decision because of a lot of the feedback from developers.

So, it looks like we can thank not only developers, but Sony’s higher-ups for thinking up the idea of giving the PS4 8GB of RAM.
