The Last of Us Movie is Happening, Naughty Dog Heavily Involved

To answer your first question: Yes, this is true.

In a report by Deadline today, they have confirmed that Screen Gems has signed on to distribute a live-action movie based on The Last of Us. Instead of handing off the project to other people, The Last of Us Creative Director and Writer Neil Druckmann will write the script, while the “creative architects” will be Naughty Dog Co-Presidents Christope Balestra and Evan Wells, The Last of Us Game Director Bruce Straley, and Druckmann. Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures are also teaming up with them.

Evan Wells offered up a statement about The Last of Us movie (via ComingSoon), detailing how they’ve talked with many companies about doing a movie since The Last of Us launched in June 2013:

Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on ‘The Last of Us’ universe is a perfect fit. Since our game released last June, we’ve talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn’t have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards. We look forward to collaborating with Sam, his team, and Screen Gems, to make a movie that will thrill fans of ‘The Last of Us’ and general audiences worldwide.

Nothing is known about the movie’s plot yet, with Deadline just highlighting The Last of Us’ logline of Joel and Ellie embarking on a journey 20 years after an infectious outbreak.

Once more information is revealed about the project we’ll let you know, and feel free to comment on our Ask PSLS from yesterday about this same subject of games being turned into movies.
