Skylanders Franchise Expands to TV

In an announcement that’s not that surprising, Activision has announced that its best-selling Skylanders franchise will heading to TV!

In a press release, Activision has announced “Skylanders Academy;” a new animated television series that will debut on Netflix and will premiere in fall of 2016. Check out the show’s outlined plot below (and yes, that image above is from the TV show).

The series follows the heroic adventures of the Skylanders team, a group of heroes with unique elemental skills and personalities who travel the vast Skylands universe, protecting it from evil-doers and showing the next wave of Academy cadets how to do things the “Skylander way.”

Produced under the eye of Eric Rogers (Futurama), Skylanders Academy will feature the voices of Justin Long (“Alvin and the Chipmunks,” “Ask Me Anything”) as Spyro, Ashley Tisdale (“Phineas and Ferb,” “High School Musical”) as Stealth Elf, Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul”) as Eruptor and Norm MacDonald (Saturday Night Live”) as Glumshanks. Additional voice talent includes The Diamond Minecart, Susan Sarandon, Daniel Wu, Parker Posey, James Hetfield, Catherine O’Hara, Bobcat Goldthwait, Chris Diamantopoulos, Jonny Rees, Harland Williams and Richard Horvitz.

Will this prove to be the right direction for the franchise? Given that Activision has sold more than 250 million toys since the franchise’s inception, I’d say they know what they’re doing.
