Releasing in September 2015, EA Sports announced today that NHL 16 is only going to be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. This doesn’t mean PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers will be left out of NHL this year though, as an NHL Legacy Edition is also coming to those consoles in September 2015.
For NHL 16, EA listened to the fans, adding in the most requested features and modes, while also including new experiences:
Team has been the heart of hockey for as long as it’s existed, and this year it’s at the heart of NHL 16. We looked to our biggest fans and asked them to be a part of our team. Their most requested features and modes are in the game and include new experiences that make NHL bigger and better. On the ice, team carries through to our gameplay, with innovation and balance at every position, so that each role is meaningful to play. In NHL 16, success is a total team effort, the result of everyone understanding that you never do it alone. You have to play as a team and win as a team.
In terms of NHL 16 features (full details here), Hockey Ultimate Team now allows you to play through single player offline season; Be a GM offers up the ability to not only go through the motions of draft day and manage your AHL affiliate team, but you can also manage the morale of individual players on your NHL roster throughout the season; and Be a Pro introduces a new progression system where how you play on the ice determined who you become in the NHL.
For the fan-favorite EA Sports Hockey League, EA has removed the progression grind, replacing it with a new player class system. They explained, “These player classes will be tuned to play together, each bringing their own strengths to the ice. The new EA Sports Hockey League is all about putting together the right mix of classes to support your team’s playing style, and then stepping on to the ice and letting your skill, not ratings, be the differentiator between being good and being great.”
Additionally, you’ll find 6v6 online team play including goalies, online couch co-op for you and up to three friends, new gameplay innovations on both offense and defense to balance the gameplay, distinct arena atmospheres, the most realistic players yet, story-driven commentary, and mascots.
In all, NHL 16’s modes include Play Now, Be a Pro, Be a GM, Season Mode, Practice Mode, Playoff Mode, NHL Moments Live, Hockey Ultimate Team, EA Sports Hockey League, Online Team Play, and Online Versus.

As for the NHL Legacy Edition on PS3/360, EA says it “brings together the most popular modes and award-winning gameplay features from nine years of NHL hockey,” complete with updated rosters and authentic schedules.
