Just a day ago, Activision and Infinity Ward released the reveal trailer for the latest Call of Duty game, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
While some people might have been excited to finally see what this year’s Call of Duty actually looks like, not everyone was impressed by what Infinity Ward cooked up. More specifically, some folks over at DICE, the makers of the Battlefield franchise, had a few things to say, which doesn’t speak too highly of Infinity Ward’s upcoming game.
Seeing this happen, we here at PlayStation LifeStyle offer our thoughts on if we think the bashing is OK, in bad taste, or something we need more of in this latest entry of Now Loading. Unsurprisingly, we all have different opinions on the matter.
What’s your take on the whole situation? Are you fine with developers being brutally honest or would you rather they keep that stuff to themselves and respect other devs? As always, share your thoughts in the comments and let’s get a discussion going.
Now Loading is a recurring staff-driven feature where PlayStation LifeStyle discusses anything video game-related under the sun (yes, even non-Sony platforms).

I am indifferent to this whole thing but if I was DICE, I'd worry less about making games that look pretty and actually make ones that sell more than CoD before I throw comments around.

I'm concerned if people really think there's anything edgy or interesting about ragging on CoD at this point — it's such a boring, tired industry cliche. I'm not saying we shouldn't criticize EA, or that a little friendly trash-talking between developers is a bad thing, but at a time when uninformed gamers like to throw around ad hominem insults and death threats at so-called "lazy" developers, I'd like to see less negativity and more unity among the professional community.

There's nothing wrong with a little trash talk or bravado but you better be able to back it up. Being caught on the wrong side of a spat isn't a good look. Just ask The Chinese Room. Battlefield 5 has to blow people away.

Considering that Battlefield 4 was essentially broken on day one (EA even considered the launch "unacceptable"), I'd worry about winning over your own fan base first before stirring the pot.

The gaming community overall does enough trash talking. A little professional, fun and friendly banter is fine to promote the rivalry, but on the professional side of things I feel like developers have an obligation to not perpetuate the blind vitriolic hate that permeates the internet. It's doubly bad when history says they can't back it up. It's easy to bash on things that are doing well, and Call of Duty sells like mad. This is a preemptive teaser trailer. Let's wait to start making wildly public judgements until the game itself is out there.

I honestly don't mind the trash talk, though DICE should really worry about it's own titles and I tell you what, the next Battlefield better not have any issues.

I'm definitely OK with the smack talking going on. I mean, I remember ads way back then that essentially called out other games/consoles flat out. And heck, I'm kinda sick of everyone trying to be polite and nice at all times (read: not being honest).
That said, though. DICE should blow people away come May 6 or the people that bashed the Infinite Warfare trailer will look really, really stupid.
I have faith that whatever they show will look better than Infinite Warfare since, well, Infinite Warfare kinda looks like crap based on the trailer.
Will we see Frostbite 4? Maybe. But regardless, if it's anywhere as visually stunning as Star Wars Battlefront, then we're in for a treat!

Here's hoping the DICE developers' overflowing confidence is justified, with Battlefield 5 making up for past mistakes. Personally, if I were these guys, I'd focus my attention internally, making BF5 the best it can be and, you know, actually stable at launch!
The insults mainly target Infinite Warfare's visuals, which has me believing that BF5 will be stepping things up in a big way, possibly debuting the Frostbite 4 engine. A man can dream, can't he?
