Sonic Mania Multiplayer Takes Place in Competition Mode, Watch the Trailer

SEGA has released a new trailer for the upcoming Sonic Mania, introducing the game’s Competition Mode. It may look familiar to long-time series fans, but there’s more than meets the eye here.

Sonic Mania’s Competition Mode will likely remind many of Sonic 2’s 2 Player Versus mode, wherein players raced against each other to reach the end of the zone. Competition Mode is similar, but it grades players on more than just getting to the goal first. The mode also grades on how many rings a player picked up, the items they’ve grabbed, and more. This is sure to even the playing field between Sonic veterans and newbies when it comes to this mode.

Take a look at the trailer to see the new mode in action:

If you’re interested in Sonic Mania, make sure to support its release, as it may affect the future of the series:

In the past two decades Sonic games have been trying to target a broader audience from kids to adults. And [Sonic] Forces has that same idea, so that means a wider range of characters that we know children like. Even if other fans may not be quite as keen.

But for Mania it’s kind of like a new approach. To target specifically 2D fans. So we don’t know whether it’ll be accepted positively in the market. We’ll find out after the game’s released, and we can figure out the direction of future titles after seeing the reaction.

Sonic Mania will release next week on August 15 for the PlayStation 4.
