Square Enix Releases Strange NieR: Automata Pre-Order Video, Says It Has No Plans for Xbox One Release

NieR: Automata director Yoko Taro has a “special message” for fans in Europe. When you pre-order the game, you’ll receive a t-shirt. Pretty straightforward, eh? Except the promotional video above just becomes kind of weird. After announcing the pre-order bonus, Taro hands his mic to Platinum Games’ designer, Taura Takahisa, then proceeds to tackle him, take off his t-shirt and roll over on the ground in excitement, shouting “Shit, Square Enix!” and repeating “NieR: Automata t-shirt!” several times.

Interesting.

We’re not sure if this is going to encourage anyone to pre-order the game but as of now, the offer only seems to be available at participating retailers in Europe including Amazon UK.

In related news, producer Yosuke Saito has told Express UK that the developers have no plans to release NieR: Automata on Xbox One primarily because Microsoft’s console doesn’t have a strong market in Japan. He also said that working on a single console gives the team the added benefit of remaining more focused and ensuring a high quality product.

The main reason for this is that the Japanese market for Xbox One is not strong, so the decision was made to focus on PlayStation 4 rather than to split our efforts across two platforms.

The biggest benefit to developing on one platform is that we did not have to split our time, allowing us to focus more on the quality. It is not about whether one platform is better than the other, it’s that from a development point of view were can devote more time to one platform.

2010’s NieR appeared on Xbox 360.

NieR: Automata is headed to the PlayStation 4 on March 7 in North America and March 10 in Europe.
