Voice of Cards announced

Square Enix Teases Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars From the Creators of NieR and Drakengard

Square Enix has teased a new card-based RPG called Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars. The game is the creation of Yoko Taro, Yosuke Saito, Keiichi Okabe, and Kimihiko Fujisaka, the minds behind the NieR and Drakengard franchises.

When we say Square Enix teased the title, that’s exactly what we mean. The game will feature an “enchanting story completely depicted by cards” that will “spark players imagination and open their minds to a different way of storytelling as the narrative unfolds.” That’s all we know. The brief teaser trailer that arrived alongside the announcement didn’t give much away either.

The title is likely to be the indie-esque digital title unrelated to the NieR franchise that Taro mentioned back in April. Saito, who is the game’s Executive Director, had described the title as “nostalgic and new” at the time. Taro, who will be the game’s Creative Director, had described the title as “off-beat”, “difficult to explain,” and “a somewhat unusual game.” His claim that he has “created something mysterious that I have no idea how to explain or sell” could explain why the teaser is so brief. Rounding out the team, Okabe will be assuming the role of Music Director while Fujisaka is the game’s Character Designer.

More information on the game has been promised for the future. The team had previously promised regular announcements about the title that could potentially happen on a monthly basis, but we’ll have to wait and see if that happens.

In the meantime, Square Enix has also recruited for Scenario Designers, an Art Director and an Assistant Producer to help with the development of new NieR content, suggesting a new title is currently in development. Two of the more recent games recently reached important milestones; NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… hit 1 million sales while NieR Automata manged to reach 6 million units sold.
