Return to Monkey Island Announced

Ron Gilbert Kept Return to Monkey Island Secret for Two Years

Ron Gilbert has announced a brand new Monkey Island game, this time called Return to Monkey Island. While officially the sixth game in the franchise, the title will be a sequel to the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. His Terrible Toybox studio will join forces with Lucasfilm Games and Devolver Digital to release the game later this year.

What do we know about Return to Monkey Island?

Return to Monkey Island is a follow-up to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. As seen in the trailer, the game will come with a more modern art style. Guybrush Threepwood will be taking a starring role again and will be voiced by Dominic Armato. Murray the Demonic Skull also makes a brief return in the trailer before he’s punted into the harbor. No other characters or any of the storyline have been revealed.

Gilbert created the Monkey Island franchise, starting with The Secret of Monkey Island and following up with a sequel, Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge. After the release of the second game, Gilbert left the studio. While the franchise carried on without him, Gilbert doesn’t consider any of the following games to “exist in my Monkey Island universe”. As such, he’s picking up where he left off. However, he will be stealing “some good ideas or characters from other games”, hence Murray’s return from his last appearance in Tales of Monkey Island.

Dave Grossman will also be helping to write the game, while Michael Land, Peter McConnel, and Clint Bajakian will be composing the soundtrack. Somehow, they all managed to keep the game a secret for two years, and it’s still enough of a secret that nobody knows whether the game will be on consoles and/or PC. We do know it will be released in 2022, though.

In other news, World of Tanks developer Wargaming has shut down all of its operations in Russia and Belarus, including the closure of its studio in Minsk. Elsewhere, Nobody Saves The World will be released on PS4 and PS5 later this month.
