As pretty much everyone in the industry guessed after Microsoft revealed their new Xbox One sales numbers yesterday, Sony has given an updated look at their PS4 sales numbers, with Andrew House revealing the new system has cumulative sales of 4.2 million units as of December 28th.

House added:

The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network. After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.

In addition to all of this, Sony is touting that over 9.7 million copies of software were sold in retail stores and the PlayStation Store in 2013 worldwide, with Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Battlefield 4, and Killzone: Shadow Fall being some of the top sellers.

When it comes to PlayStation Plus, global subscriptions have increased over 90% since PS4 launch as of December 31st, 2013.

There’s also some very impressive streaming numbers on the PS4, with over 1.7 million gameplay broadcasts on Twitch and Ustream, totaling over 55 million minutes. As well, according to Twitch, 20% of their subscribers are PS4 owners, with Ustream reporting an average of 40 minutes of streaming per broadcaster. In all, there have been nearly 22 million spectate sessions.

With 2.1 million PS4s sold as of December 1st, this means Sony managed to double their record-setting mark in under a month.
