Kickstarter Game Funding Drops Significantly in 2014

October 5, 2014Written by Zarmena Khan

Thanks in part to some high-profile mishaps, Kickstarter game funding seems to have dropped significantly in 2014, according to ICO Partners analyst Thomas Bidaux.

Last year, a total of $58 million were pledged to video game projects, but the first half of 2014 only managed to attract $13.5 million in funding. Based on this, an estimated $27 million will be raised in total this year, which is less than half of the amount pledged in 2013. Bidaux pointed out that last year, 21 projects managed to raise more than $500,000 each including Mighty No. 9 and Dreamfall Chapters. However, this year, only three projects managed to achieve that target, and we’re already into the last quarter of 2014.

It’s worth noting that Kickstarter recently updated its terms of use, making it mandatory for creators to complete projects. The change in terms came in light of the failure of a high-profile campaign for the game Clang.
