Horizon Zero Dawn was one of the best received games of the year, and many critics pointed to how the characters in the game looked and acted as one of the many reasons behind its success. With Horizon Zero Dawn: Complete Edition out and in stores now, Jeroen Roding – the Community Manager for Guerrilla – took to the PlayStation Blog to discuss some of what Guerrilla Games had to go through in order to create the characters from the game.
Using Golden, the fortune hunter from the recently released The Frozen Wilds expansion, as an example, the folks at Guerrilla discussed how fleshing out a characters backstory helps to build up how that character will act, talk, and perform when it’s time to make them. The team also goes into detail on how the characters go from the personality and backstory stage to conceptualizing how a character will look, translating that into a game as hyper-realistic as Horizon Zero Dawn, and then finally prepping them for animation and putting them into the game. If you want to see the entire process unfold (with videos included like the one above) then make sure to head over to the PlayStation Blog for more information.
In case you haven’t had a chance to play Horizon Zero Dawn yet, make sure to check out our review of the game:
Horizon Zero Dawn is an early contender for game of the year. Guerrilla Games has outdone themselves, in astounding fashion. This is a glorious game, the result of a team of masterful artisans who not only had a story that they wished to tell, but a world that was living inside of them which they wanted to share with us all. Now, we get to play inside their creation, and it is a breathtaking experience to behold. A massive, open world filled with equally massive, terrifying robots, juxtaposed against the beauty of the Earth, nature fighting back the darkness as it tends to do. Horizon Zero Dawn is the kind of game you play to get lost in, and can be enjoyed by players of all types. This could be the beginning of a stellar franchise, and there is something for everyone here. If you own a PS4, you owe it to yourself to give Horizon Zero Dawn a go.
Horizon Zero Dawn is available now.
