Epic Games is Tackling the Fortnite Keyboard/Mouse Issue on PS4

For a while now, the PS4 Fortnite community has been struggling with players’ ability to use keyboard and mouse controls. This is of course due to the perceived advantage these players have over regular controller users. Now, in the latest Fortnite state of development update, Epic Games has announced plans to add some more nuance to matchmaking in order to circumvent unconventional control choices.

Despite being a crossplay title (even if just with PC and mobile players for PS4), users are still generally placed in matchmaking pools based on their platforms. However, that’s just based on console choice, so someone using a keyboard and mouse with their PS4 is still going to end up in the controller-dominant PS4 pool.

In a future update, Epic Games has a logic upgrade prepared that will detect controller input, and group players accordingly. Now, console players with keyboard and mouse input will be grouped up with players on PC, regardless of platform. However, the old rules still apply, in that if you’re partied up with a PC player, you’ll end up in the PC pool for matchmaking regardless of your input device. This is the official language:

  • If anyone in your party uses a mouse and keyboard on console, you will be matchmade with PC players and other KB+M players (as if you partied up with a PC player).
