Marvel’s Spider-Man Is Breaking Sales Records in Japan
It’s only been a little more than a month since the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man, yet it keeps breaking sales records left and right. It’s the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive and has outsold heavy-hitters like Far Cry 5. We already knew Marvel’s Spider-Man was selling extremely well in Japan, but now we have an idea of just what a phenomenon Spidey is.
It’s one of the best-selling Western-developed PlayStation 4 titles overall, surpassed only by the likes of Call of Duty and Minecraft. Somewhat more impressively, it’s also the best-selling Western-developed, Sony-funded title since Crash Bandicoot: Warped on the original PlayStation! That means it’s sold better than titans like God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us. People must really have an appetite for some good web-swinging, don’t they?
Marvel’s Spider-Man is also the best-selling Spider-Man game in Japan (no surprise, really), and the best-selling superhero game overall. While the superhero genre may not seem especially crowded, the Batman: Arkham series is a heavy-hitter in its own right.
The gaming audience has definitely attached to Marvel’s Spider-Man. In addition to its stunning sales numbers, it also has the highest number of Platinum trophy unlocks. With a combination of unique trophies and addictive collectibles, players have had plenty to work through while they wait for the upcoming DLC.
