In the spirit of Halloween, we’ve put together a mix of some really fitting games that we’ve enjoyed playing over the years. While some of these games are outright scary, others tend to lean towards the shock factor. Nevertheless, the titles that we’ve added to our list are “freaky” enough to deserve a mention.
Since it wasn’t possible to include every single game we wanted, we’ve endeavored to include games from different eras. We encourage our readers to chip in with more names in the comments below.
Without further ado, flip through the gallery below to see which titles made the cut.
Halloween 2014 horror games feature
-
Resident Evil
Yes, we're going way back to 1996! The original Resident Evil might not look as scary now, but back then, the game was really unsettling.
-
Clock Tower
A sequel to the Japanese release of Clock Tower for the SNES, this title was known to make players jump back in the day. Watch out for the Scissorman!
-
Fatal Frame
As our friends over at GameRevolution put it, " Easily-freaked and superstitious types may not make it all the way through." But if you don't care about that, go for it!
-
Silent Hill 2
The Silent Hill franchise needs no introduction. With the first game setting precedent for what a psychological survival horror game should look like, the second one succeeded in disturbing the crap out of people.
-
BioShock
The original BioShock's atmosphere contains some real tense moments. You'll realize this when you encounter Big Daddy for the first time. Or a Splicer, for that matter.
-
Dead Space
Dead Space does an excellent job at ensuring that its players feel uneasy throughout the game. The USG Ishimura was a great setting that helped to instil some fear from the get-go.
-
Outlast
Imagine having to escape from someone like the crazy Dr Richard Trager in real life. Seriously, to hell with that guy! You can read our review of the game here.
-
Alien: Isolation
PSLS's Paulmichael notes that Alien: Isolation is genuinely scary, and is a challenging yet entertaining horror game.
-
The Evil Within
Our reviewer believes The Evil Within is more creepy/gory than outright scary, but that goes with the theme of our playlist!
-
PT Silent Hill
Alright, so it isn't a game. But the PT Silent Hill demo really did crawl under our skins. Who would have thought that walking down a corridor could be that scary?
